The Moment We Paused

I stood looking out
across the chill
November Thames,
my excitement palpable
in the brisk, damp air.
I was here
in the heart of you,
near the lifeline river
that runs through your core,
and I was absorbed
into the moment you shared
with all of us present,
with the world itself.

We fell silent as the hands
of the mighty clock touched eleven.
We stood still as phantoms
remembering lost lives.
We held our breath in that moment
and prayed for peace
in the hush of the city,
in the heavy pause.
There was love
in the sadness,
and connection
in the silence.
And the thoughts flew
like white doves
in a grey November sky.
